Not a word about the war is the pilot issue of a larger project in progress: an illustrated diary of Natalia Zourabova’s life moving between past and present against the background of war.
The autobiographical illustrated novel Fig Tree (working title) began in October 2024 as a self-therapeutic diary, a year after the new war began—an attempt to process everyday realities through drawing and writing.
For several months, Zourabova sketched moments that felt essential to her: memories connected to the situation of the war and experiences that deeply affected her. Over time, the diary grew beyond its personal meaning and became a historical document.
The narrative weaves together present moments, memories from different periods of her life, and reflections connecting personal experience with broader social dimensions.
Rather than adopting a political stance or drawing on imagery from mass media, the project offers an intimate record shaped by doubt, reflection, and emotional truth. It is neither political justification nor media reportage, but a space for personal experience.
The original works are made with watercolor in a square 20 × 20 cm notebook.
