MaryKate Maher works in both sculpture and collage. She utilizes abstraction, symbols, and repetitive forms to reference the body, geology, and mythologies found in landscapes. Her sculptures focus on weighted and grounded objects, referencing lines, shapes, and textures found in nature, such as rocks, site markers, and geological phenomena.
Maher’s collage works complement her sculptures by focusing on the compression of space and light. Her gradients and repetition of circular orbs create depth planes, questioning their sense of volume and dimension.
In all of Maher’s works, forms and themes repeat like fragments of visual grammar. Her application of different materials and components becomes foundational to her process, where many small movements combine to create a larger voluminous form.
MaryKate Maher was born in Philadelphia, PA. She received her MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and her BFA from Arcadia University. She studied abroad at the Glasgow School of Art and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.
Maher has received fellowships from New York Foundation for the Arts, MacDowell, Yaddo, Franconia Sculpture Park and Socrates Sculpture Park.
Exhibitions have included MoCA Westport, CT, The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, PA; Triangle Arts Association, NY, with international exhibitions at Kunstwerk Carlshutte, Germany, Takt Berlin/Leipzig, Germany and CICA Museum, South Korea. Her work has been written about in Artsy, Brooklyn Magazine, Hyperallergic, L Magazine, BOMB, Art Zealous and ANTEmag. Maher is represented by KALINER gallery, and lives in Brooklyn, NY
Maher’s practice spans a balanced approach to resolving tension in her compositions by exploring relativities in volume, line and negative space. The artist recognizes the irregularities created by traditional working methods, contrasting these idiosyncrasies with symmetrical, idealized forms in a manner that reflects our expectations of perfection in an uncertain, shifting reality.
